How people would be referred to this page and what they want here

How

phpGedview link

  • Very likely Will John Finlay do this? Tom Haws 09:24, 23 November 2005 (EST)
I'll ask him --Laurie Lewis 12:37, 5 December 2005 (EST)

Sourceforge forum links

  • Very likely Already happening. Tom Haws 09:24, 23 November 2005 (EST)

Google search

  • Unlikely To Google, there is nothing special about this page. Tom Haws 09:24, 23 November 2005 (EST)
Site is being hit by search robots already. It comes up for both Google and MSN when you do searches. To make it more "findable" on these search engines we need a few more sites linking back to PGVWiki. --Laurie Lewis 12:27, 5 December 2005 (EST)
Yes, but remember that Google searches make no special distinction about this page (except that it is directly linked from SourceForge, so maybe I am wrong). Once the version of PGV that links to the wiki in the Help menu hits the streets, we will be having hundreds of linking sites. I am hoping to eventually have the wiki be the main documentation link from PGV installations. Tom Haws 02:44, 13 December 2005 (EST)

Bookmark

  • Unlikely Core editors won't come here for info. New users won't bookmark the site. Tom Haws 09:24, 23 November 2005 (EST)

What

Installation error

  • Likely If referred from Sourceforge forums. Tom Haws 09:24, 23 November 2005 (EST)

Installation procedure

  • Likely If referred from Sourceforge. Tom Haws 09:24, 23 November 2005 (EST)

Administrator conventions guidance

  • Very likely Laurie's spur for creation of this site. Tom Haws 09:24, 23 November 2005 (EST)

User help

  • Less likely Most users not motivated or don't need this site. Tom Haws 09:24, 23 November 2005 (EST)
I think it could be a great reference for users. Especially if it is able to be put together with an holistic approach to the documentation. It could then include not only the basic how-tos but an extension on it as to how users can get the most out of the software. Interested users of phpGedView could indicate to their users the wiki for help if a quality documentation process is created. At this time i think phpGedView is for people who are computer literate - what we need to provide is a reference for those who are - "Administratiors Guide" and for those who are not - "Users Guide". A quality and simple users guide could well encourage other people to use phpGedView so that true "family" updating of information occurs. My Vision anyway. --Laurie Lewis 12:33, 5 December 2005 (EST)
A great vision. I am fully supportive. Tom Haws 02:45, 13 December 2005 (EST)

Duplication of articles

Laurie has alerted me that there is some duplication starting to happen. Do you mean duplication of content or duplication of links?

  • Duplication of links is really easy to fix. When you see a red link that you know is served by a different article name, simply click on it and add #REDIRECT [[Existing article name]] to make an alias article name. This is a very effective way to point numerous off-the-cuff wikilinks (alternate wordings, spellings, and capitalizations) to the same page.
  • Duplication of content takes a little bit of effort. You can merge it all into a single article and redirect the emptied article to the designated one. Or some forms of duplicate information may be acceptable if targeted differently, such as PGVWiki:Introduction vs Help:Editing.

Clutter

I think this page is too much at this point. It may be frightening. Could we possibly move it to storage for the future and come up with something simpler? Tom Haws 07:20, 1 December 2005 (EST)

Why do you think it is too much Tom. I have tried to make it like an intro page and I have taken on board the comments and simplified the Community Portal page. I need a bit more feedback to understand why? --Laurie Lewis 12:26, 5 December 2005 (EST)
I love it today! Great work. We'll see how inviting it is (to other than the spammers :-D). Tom Haws 02:46, 13 December 2005 (EST)

Link or mention of phpGedView

  • I think a mention of where to install phpGedView should be more prominent on the main page. I mean, for people that found this site using a search engine with keywords like "family tree software" it should be quick to access the website. Maybe a brief line should be added in the welcome message or something like that. I leave it up for discussion. (P.S.: I will contribute more to the wiki page after I am done with my final exams next week). Gadig 08:14, 14 December 2005 (EST)

Danish site hacked !!

I came to this site, as I am setting up PGV. As I am Danish I entered the Danish site and discovered that it has been hacked. Take a look at [1]. I have no idea, who can do something to stop this; but I presume it is most likely tat the people responsible will see it here.

The Search box...

Should be higher up on the sidebar so it is visible without having to scroll down. Michael A. White 12:17, 22 February 2008 (EST)
