Adding versus uploading GEDCOM
- Uploading GEDCOM files: Uploading files can be done within the PhpGedView application without needing a FTP program.
- Adding GEDCOM files: If a previously uploaded file is still present in your GEDCOM directory or you already used FTP to transfer the file to your server, then you can use it without using the Upload functionality in PhpGedView. Sometimes, because of file or upload size limitations, you need to use Add functionality.
Upload GEDCOM
Unlike the Add GEDCOM function, the GEDCOM file you wish to add to your database does not have to be on your server.
The page that is shown to you during this process is different in one aspect only from the Configuration Options for a GEDCOM file. Further information on the rest of the options is dealt with in greater detail here.
The additional step shown to you is displaying this option at the top of the configuration screen
At this stage you may type in the complete path and file name in the text box or use the Browse button on the page to bring up a window from which you can locate and select the file.
You can also use this function to upload a ZIP file containing the GEDCOM file. PhpGedView will recognize the ZIP file and extract the file and the filename automatically. If a GEDCOM file with the same name already exists in PhpGedView, it will, after your confirmation, be overwritten. However, all GEDCOM settings made previously will be preserved.
You will find more help on other pages of the procedure.
