PGVWiki logo

Please help us develop a nice logo for this site at PGVWiki:Logo.

Page types (Namespaces)

At PGVWiki:Namespace I explain a little about page types, which are called namespaces in Mediawiki lingo. I would like comment especially on PGVWiki vs. PGV Wiki. Which name is going to be "correct"? I have been using PGVWiki. But now I see the installation is called PGV Wiki. And the logo is split. Maybe I should take a hint? Tom Haws 07:50, 24 November 2005 (EST)

In line with the naming conventions used by Mediawiki Tomis right and that the namespace should be PGVWiki (with a capital W). The default configuration made during installation (using the space), has been changed removing the space so automatic pages will now show PGVWiki without the space. The logo that we are currently using is open for development and the community selecting an appropriate icon. I personally feel that an icon based on the Mediawiki icon of the blue [[ ]] brackets and an image of a tree would look very good. It would also show the wiki's roots (after all we are about family histories). I am not sure you even need the name but if the name is used it should be PGVWiki. --Laurie 08:13, 24 November 2005 (EST)

(edit conflict) The only rational reason I can think of for why it would have to be PGVWiki instead of PGV Wiki is if we wanted to plan for and be harmonized with a possible pgvwiki domain name someday. Tom Haws 08:15, 24 November 2005 (EST)

Thanks, Laurie. Those sound like great plans! If a page is a page about PGVWiki instead of about phpGedView, it should be prefixed with PGVWiki: This helps us keep a clear mental distinction between the audiences and purposes for our pages. I was also thinking that the pages with no prefix might ought to be called something special like "articles" to distiguish them from all the rest of the stuff behind the curtain. Suggested Naming Conventions

PGVWiki has at this time four (4) areas (shown in sidebar)

• phpgedview
• genealogy
• site help
• pgvwiki community

phpgedview

At present this menu area has a number of sub sections defined. They are

• Main Page
• Installation Guide
• User Guide
• Administrator Guide
• How To
• FAQ

All pages created in these sections should have the phpGedView logo at the top with a line underneath. This shows that these pages are directly linked to phpGedView.

The main page for each of these sections (and any others that are created) will be called the same as the menu name. All sub pages under the sections top page will be named:- SectionName:PageName (please note that there are no spaces before and after the colon).

genealogy

All pages created in this section will be start be in the format Genealogy:PageName (please note that there are no spaces before and after the colon).

site help

All pages created in this section will be start be in the format Help:PageName (please note that there are no spaces before and after the colon).

pgvwiki community

All pages created in this section will be start be in the format PGVWiki:PageName (please note that there are no spaces before and after the colon).

Languages

One of the founding requirements of PGVWiki is to approximate the multi-lingual support strength of phpGedView. How are we doing with that task? See the bottom of Main Page and how the {{es:Pagina Principal}} language link is displayed on the side bar for an example of how Mediawiki does this. Tom Haws 09:42, 24 November 2005 (EST)

PGV versions

We need a standard for treatment of PGV versions in our articles. I'll start with my vision. Tom Haws

1. Make the first section of each article General to all (or 95% of the current installed) versions of phpGedView.
2. Make the next section any special notes for the latest numbered version.
3. Continue after that section with more sections giving notes on as many previous versions as convenient or necessary.

Sections

At Wikipedia, the convention for sections is for the top level to have two equals signs (see Help:Editing#Sections, paragraphs, lists and lines). But I notice (and I like) at the current version of Installation Guide, where Laurie used single equal signs, it seemed to produce a bigger section heading. I like that. First of all, is it my imagination? Second, why does Wikipedia use two? Third, are we brave enough to make single =Headings= our standard? I thought it was at least worth asking.

SourceForge forums

It would be nice to mirror the information in the SourceForge forums and extract the FAQ tagged items there for inclusion here, since this site will always be under our control and be able to be pesumably faster and easier to browse and search.

I have entered a tech support request at SourgeForge for a possible database dump of the PGV forums. Will keep you posted on status in coming weeks. Tom Haws 10:29, 24 November 2005 (EST)
