Conflicts are pretty common at Wikipedia too. It's not a big deal unless you are moving pages and stuff. One way to avoid them is to edit sections instead of pages if the page is really busy. I had thought we might keep things simple at the community portal by sticking to the one page for now (so none of us misses anything). But we can link to the discussion page. That's fine. I'm reading. Thoughts below as I go:
*Interlanguage linking seems to be conceived in Mediawiki as a special type of [[Wikipedia:InterWiki]] [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interwiki_links] linking. (The preceding red link is a failed interwiki link that wrongly assumes the presence of an interwiki map at PGVWiki.)
* As you have pointed out, we seem to be missing a way for the PGVWiki system to know that when we go to a French article we are now in the French PGV Wiki. I have a hunch that we may find the only way to overcome this is to run the various languages as separate Mediawiki projects. You have surmised that running the languages as various subfolders avoids having to keep multiple logins, and may simplify the issue. But we are not seeing any indication yet that your vision is able to be implemented. What would it take to run each language as a separate project? What does that mean fully?
* This link [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Interwiki_links#language_links] explains (I think) how language links are special.
* The links at http://fr.wiki.phpgedview.net/index.php/Special:Allmessages still link to, for example, http://fr.wiki.phpgedview.net/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Monobook.js/en EN? Yes. The French Special:Allmessages links to a /en message file. Go figure. All the languages seem to be using the same Allmessages file. Could this be because English isn't defined as a language?

== phpGedView / CMS "How to" Article ==

Dear Laurie,

I have finished getting Joomla! and phpGedView integrated on my site, and have gotten a good start on dealing with the backlog of offline content, and getting stuff moved out of phpGedView that didn't really belong there, but I had no other place to put it.

So, I decided to do a first draft of a "how to" article, and came here for that purpose.

I quickly realized I was not well enough prepared, and that this article is going to be lengthier than I anticipated. I think I better draft it offline, and then figure out how to upload and tweak it here.

Some additional considerations:

1. A "How To" article could end up promoting CMS for phpGedView users for whom it is ill suited, absent treatment of the pro's and con's of CMS, especially as they relate to genealogy sites in general, and PGV in particular. Starting my article with a "to CMS or not to CMS" section bloats it, and would require those who have already made up their minds to scroll through a lot of text to get to the nuts and bolts. It seems a separate "Do I Need/Want a CMS" article would be better, but does not fit into the "How To" Category structure you have set up.

2. My experience and expertise is limited almost exclusively to Joomla!/Mambo. Some of what I have learned by implementing this would apply to any CMS. While "shopping" for a CMS, I also
found some whose specifications are completely incompatible with a PGV installation. Other info is specific to integrating Joomla! with PGV. If I write an article entitled "How to Integrate phpGedView with a CMS," there are going to be gaps for those who pick one of the Nukes, or something else. But, if I write one entitled "How to Integrate phpGedview with Joomla!" it sets a precedent which, if followed, could end up filling your how-to category with articles on third-party packages, crowding out and obscuring those which have a wider application to the PGV community. Perhaps it would make sense for me to put the information which applies to all CMS's in one article, and the Joomla!-specific stuff in another, which could be linked to the first.

Anyway, it will probably be the weekend before I have time again to do the writing, so let me know your thoughts, and I will proceed accordingly. I'll check back here before going beyond composing some notes, or you can e-mail me: jmg[at]gilhousenfamily[dot]com

The way PGVWiki is set up for the foreseeable future, there is a single main page that references all the languages. It is at http://wiki.phpgedview.net. Until the decision is made to set up the wiki for all supported PGV languages (a feature available and active at the Wiki, but not implemented), the only meaningful link from PGV to the wiki is this single, language-neutral link. http://wiki.phpgedview.net

Please remove the second and third links.

For last year and more I was interesting to create managable tree of my relatives. I forgot, but it will be not so wrong to say that phpGedView was one of the first engine that I found for my desires :). From this I get first knowleage about gedcom, different types of trees etc. But big disadvantage of pgv is a super wide tree for many generations ((( So I create at first tree builder. At august I decide make free global wiki tree :) And starts http://rodovid.org . Over some time I add initial gedcom import engine. And couple days ago I recode it to useable variant. Below I add some examples:

As you have probably noted, I've been helping Im with some Wiki editing - and then decided to try some for myself. I thought that something small would be a good place to start, so readme.txt seemed a straight-forward item!

I have been doing something wrong in trying to get PGV to install on my web site www.hibdon.net/phpgedview
I can NOT get the database to connect to anything no matter what I put in any of the boxes.
I have tried to follow the directions but I guess I just don't understand them.
I am attempting to set up a site for the Hibdon Family
It was letting me into the config but now all I get is site not available when I try to connect
There is no data of any kind in there because I have not been able to get that far not even a admin user.

I would be happy to provide access to the site for you but not sure if this is the right place to do that.

Conflicts are pretty common at Wikipedia too. It's not a big deal unless you are moving pages and stuff. One way to avoid them is to edit sections instead of pages if the page is really busy. I had thought we might keep things simple at the community portal by sticking to the one page for now (so none of us misses anything). But we can link to the discussion page. That's fine. I'm reading. Thoughts below as I go:
*Interlanguage linking seems to be conceived in Mediawiki as a special type of [[Wikipedia:InterWiki]] [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interwiki_links] linking. (The preceding red link is a failed interwiki link that wrongly assumes the presence of an interwiki map at PGVWiki.)
* As you have pointed out, we seem to be missing a way for the PGVWiki system to know that when we go to a French article we are now in the French PGV Wiki. I have a hunch that we may find the only way to overcome this is to run the various languages as separate Mediawiki projects. You have surmised that running the languages as various subfolders avoids having to keep multiple logins, and may simplify the issue. But we are not seeing any indication yet that your vision is able to be implemented. What would it take to run each language as a separate project? What does that mean fully?
* This link [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Interwiki_links#language_links] explains (I think) how language links are special.
* The links at http://fr.wiki.phpgedview.net/index.php/Special:Allmessages still link to, for example, http://fr.wiki.phpgedview.net/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Monobook.js/en EN? Yes. The French Special:Allmessages links to a /en message file. Go figure. All the languages seem to be using the same Allmessages file. Could this be because English isn't defined as a language?
* URLs don't seem consistent. Sometime you get this http://wiki.phpgedview.net/index.php?title=Main_Page vs. this

And if you link to [[Main Page]] from fr, you get the English [[Main Page]]. Sigh. Ahh. Maybe they have to be pointed to different databases. Hmm. Separate interlanguage interwiki projects. Sounds familiar from my reading.

== phpGedView / CMS "How to" Article ==

Dear Laurie,

I have finished getting Joomla! and phpGedView integrated on my site, and have gotten a good start on dealing with the backlog of offline content, and getting stuff moved out of phpGedView that didn't really belong there, but I had no other place to put it.

So, I decided to do a first draft of a "how to" article, and came here for that purpose.

I quickly realized I was not well enough prepared, and that this article is going to be lengthier than I anticipated. I think I better draft it offline, and then figure out how to upload and tweak it here.

Some additional considerations:

1. A "How To" article could end up promoting CMS for phpGedView users for whom it is ill suited, absent treatment of the pro's and con's of CMS, especially as they relate to genealogy sites in general, and PGV in particular. Starting my article with a "to CMS or not to CMS" section bloats it, and would require those who have already made up their minds to scroll through a lot of text to get to the nuts and bolts. It seems a separate "Do I Need/Want a CMS" article would be better, but does not fit into the "How To" Category structure you have set up.

2. My experience and expertise is limited almost exclusively to Joomla!/Mambo. Some of what I have learned by implementing this would apply to any CMS. While "shopping" for a CMS, I also
found some whose specifications are completely incompatible with a PGV installation. Other info is specific to integrating Joomla! with PGV. If I write an article entitled "How to Integrate phpGedView with a CMS," there are going to be gaps for those who pick one of the Nukes, or something else. But, if I write one entitled "How to Integrate phpGedview with Joomla!" it sets a precedent which, if followed, could end up filling your how-to category with articles on third-party packages, crowding out and obscuring those which have a wider application to the PGV community. Perhaps it would make sense for me to put the information which applies to all CMS's in one article, and the Joomla!-specific stuff in another, which could be linked to the first.

Anyway, it will probably be the weekend before I have time again to do the writing, so let me know your thoughts, and I will proceed accordingly. I'll check back here before going beyond composing some notes, or you can e-mail me: jmg[at]gilhousenfamily[dot]com

Use the < nowiki > command to turn on off
this is the test <nowiki> <br> <pre> </nowiki> and this is the end.

If you are having some problems with formatting go to the help section and it will take you to some good documents.

The latter two links are broken and are inappropriate for the current PGVWiki setup.

The way PGVWiki is set up for the foreseeable future, there is a single main page that references all the languages. It is at http://wiki.phpgedview.net. Until the decision is made to set up the wiki for all supported PGV languages (a feature available and active at the Wiki, but not implemented), the only meaningful link from PGV to the wiki is this single, language-neutral link. http://wiki.phpgedview.net

Please remove the second and third links.

sorry for like spam introduction, but I don't know how names this comment.
For last year and more I was interesting to create managable tree of my relatives. I forgot, but it will be not so wrong to say that phpGedView was one of the first engine that I found for my desires :). From this I get first knowleage about gedcom, different types of trees etc. But big disadvantage of pgv is a super wide tree for many generations ((( So I create at first tree builder. At august I decide make free global wiki tree :) And starts http://rodovid.org . Over some time I add initial gedcom import engine. And couple days ago I recode it to useable variant. Below I add some examples:

#all known ancetors of my childs - http://en.rodovid.org/wk/Special:Tree/29 (all of them in ukrainian but understandable, i hope)
#not bad large and with compact view tree in test db - http://engine.rodovid.org/wk/Special:Tree/3365
#32 generations of ansectors into db for tests - http://engine.rodovid.org/wk/Special:Tree/5392
#275 descendants of Edward III Plantagenet (imported from roal.ged without clan values - so it is mostly grey (:, also into test db ) - http://engine.rodovid.org/wk/Special:Tree/905
# Balbo Baggins's descendants - http://engine.rodovid.org/wk/Special:Tree/1314

So I propose to merge our efforts, my online compact wiki tree and pgv offline gedcom processor. We can make links from each to other at beginning, and in future use a PGV as special browser throw rodovid... I think we can find many points of contact.

As you have probably noted, I've been helping Im with some Wiki editing - and then decided to try some for myself. I thought that something small would be a good place to start, so readme.txt seemed a straight-forward item!

I have a web space for it at the moment (http://members.optusnet.com.au/pblair30/), but would like to put it to PGVwiki. As it is a work in progress (I can see extra things it needs) it probably doesn't quite fit the present headings. What would you think? It needs to be plainly WIP.

Anyway, could I ask you to figure a space for me, and let me know how you want me to handle it? Then I can post it + graphics...

I have been doing something wrong in trying to get PGV to install on my web site www.hibdon.net/phpgedview
I can NOT get the database to connect to anything no matter what I put in any of the boxes.
I have tried to follow the directions but I guess I just don't understand them.
I am attempting to set up a site for the Hibdon Family
It was letting me into the config but now all I get is site not available when I try to connect
There is no data of any kind in there because I have not been able to get that far not even a admin user.

I would be happy to provide access to the site for you but not sure if this is the right place to do that.

::I think it could be a great reference for users. Especially if it is able to be put together with an holistic approach to the documentation. Interested users of phpGedView could indicate to their users the wiki for help if a quality documentation process is created. At this time i think phpGedView is for people who are computer literate - what we need to provide is a reference for those who are - "Administratiors Guide" and for those who are not - "Users Guide". * Duplication of links is really easy to fix. When you see a red link that you know is served by a different article name, simply click on it and add <nowiki>#REDIRECT [[Existing article name]]</nowiki> to make an alias article name. This is a very effective way to point numerous off-the-cuff wikilinks (alternate wordings, spellings, and capitalizations) to the same page.

I have no idea, who can do something to stop this; but I presume it is most likely tat the people responsible will see it here.

I have been doing something wrong in trying to get PGV to install on my web site www.hibdon.net/phpgedview
I can NOT get the database to connect to anything no matter what I put in any of the boxes.
I have tried to follow the directions but I guess I just don't understand them.
I am attempting to set up a site for the Hibdon Family
It was letting me into the config but now all I get is site not available when I try to connect
There is no data of any kind in there because I have not been able to get that far not even a admin user.

I would be happy to provide access to the site for you but not sure if this is the right place to do that.

A new default template has been introduced to PGVWiki with a software update. The new skin is called Vector and has collapsible menus. It is designed to give a bit of extra space to aid navigation. With it comes an updated editor so you will see some changes there. Hopefully making it a lot easier for people to add and update content. If you prefer the old template you can select if by going to "My preferences".
The down side is that we have been experiencing a big increase in spam attacks on PGVWiki. To try and combat this we have added some more security measures so you may notice a slight performance decrease as the site now performs quite a few more checks and balances.

==Traditional Genealogy==
Traditionally, you run a genealogy program on your home computer and enter all the information you collect. Several people (possibly located around the world) may be doing exactly the same thing. At some point you may find you have links to each others trees and you go ahead and update your tree with this new information. There are several problems with this:
# You have to enter all the data yourself. This can be:

Lightbox Album is a PGV module which uses a different way of laying out individual media in PHPGedView with the help of a version of [http://www.clearbox.hu/ Clearbox JS 2] script. It is primarily called via an "Album" tab on the individual page, but is also operable from many pages within PGV which have media thumbnails.

When a thumbnail is clicked, the image is viewed via a modified version of the "Clearbox JS 2" viewer. The Thumbnail must be linked with a 'viewable' file: graphic (.jpg, .jpeg, .gif, or .png), video, URL, pdf etc. The URL link in the Media object will result in opening the page in the viewer, and a .pdf file will be displayed in pdf viewer if installed. The normal popup viewer is used for other file types which will not work with "Lightbox Album" for the moment.

The None option eliminates image transitions so that the new image immediately replaces the old without visible adjustment of the new image's dimensions.

Starting a New Tree

PhpGedView (PGV) can contain and display one or more family trees, which may or may not be related to each other. The family tree data is stored in a file called by convention [[GEDCOM]]. It is recommended that you keep a single Gedcom for all related persons. It may be tempting to separate them into different sections, but the system is not very well suited to work with overlapping Gedcoms (It works reasonably well if there is only one person shared between two Gedcoms, although it requires additional layer (see [[Remote Link Individuals Across Websites And Databases]]). If you need to split a Gedcom, you can always do it later in PGV, which has tools for exporting part of the data based on different criteria (see [[Splitting a Gedcom]]).

If you have more than one Gedcom, you can select it by clicking on the Welcome Page icon.

==Import Gedcom==

The family tree or Gedcom can be imported or created from scratch. There are many genealogy programs, and virtually all of them can export their data in GEDCOM form. This is the reason why importing the Gedcom is an integral part of the PGV - many people have already done some work on their genealogy. If you already created your family tree, you can import it to PGV, and hopefully retain all the information. PGV is very tolerant to errors or unusual use of the standard, and generally will allow the import to proceed. After importing you can immediately start working with the data.

==Create Gedcom from scratch==

If PGV is your first attempt at genealogy research, you need to create a new Gedcom (family Tree) (see [[Create a new GEDCOM]]) Simply give it a name and accept default configuration. You can configure the Gedcom now, but you can also leave the configuration changes for later. The process will create a new Gedcom with a single person (temporarily named ''Given Names Surname''). Start with this person, editing his/her name and gender, and proceed adding related persons.

==Convert other formats to Gedcom==

==What exactly is a GEDCOM and how do I use it?==

One of the biggest advantages to using the Internet for genealogy research is the ability it provides to exchange information with other researchers. One of the most common methods used for this information exchange is the GEDCOM, an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication. In simple terms it is a method of formatting your family tree data into a text file which can be easily read and converted by any genealogy software program. The GEDCOM specification was originally developed in 1985 and is owned and managed by the Family History Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The current version of the specification is GEDCOM 5.5 which was released on 12 January 1996. There was a draft for GEDCOM 5.5.1 (October 2nd, 1999) which was accepted by a number of programmers of genealogical software but this draft was never formally approved. On December 6, 2002 a beta version of GEDCOM 6.0 was released for developers to study. GEDCOM 6.0 will be the first version to store data in XML format.

A GEDCOM specification uses a set of TAGS to describe the information in your family file, such as INDI for individual, FAM for family, BIRT for birth and DATE for a date. Many beginners make the mistake of trying to open and read the file with a word processor. Theoretically, this can be done, but it is a very tedious task. GEDCOMS are best suited for opening with a family tree software program or a special GEDCOM viewer (see related resources). Otherwise, they basically just look like a bunch of gibberish.

If have ever opened a GEDCOM file using your word processor, you have probably been faced with a seeming jumble of numbers, abbreviations, and bits and pieces of data. There are no blank lines and no indentations in a GEDCOM file. That's because it is a specification for exchanging information from one computer to another, and was never really intended to be read as a text file.

GEDCOMS basically take your family information and put it in an outline format. Records in a GEDCOM file are arranged in groups of lines that hold information about one individual (INDI) or one family (FAM) and each line in an individual record has a level number. The first line of every record is numbered zero (0) to show that it is the beginning of a new record. Within that record, different level numbers are subdivisions of the next level above it. For example, the birth of an individual may be given level number one (1) and further information about the birth (date, place, etc.) would be given level two (2).

After the level number, you will see a descriptive tag, which refers to the type of data contained in that line. Most tags are obvious: BIRT for birth and PLAC for place, but some are a little more obscure, such as BARM for Bar Mitzvah.

A simple example of GEDCOM records (my explanations are underlined:

Tags can also serve as pointers (@I2@), which indicate a related individual, family or source within the same GEDCOM file. For example, a family record (FAM) will contain pointers to the individual records (INDI) for the husband, wife and children.

As you can see, a GEDCOM is basically a connected database of records with pointers which keep all of the relationships straight. While you should now be able to decipher a GEDCOM with a text editor, you will still find it much easier to read with the appropriate software.

===How Can I Read a GEDCOM File?===

If you've spent much time on the Web researching your family tree, then it is likely that you've either downloaded a GEDCOM file from the Internet or received one from a fellow research via email or on floppy disk. So now you have this nifty family tree which may contain vital clues to your ancestors and your computer can't seem to open it. What to do?

==How To Open and Read a GEDCOM File==

===Is it Really a GEDCOM?===
Begin by ensuring that the file that you want to open is truly a GEDCOM file, and not a family tree file created in some proprietary format by a genealogy software program. A file is in GEDCOM format when it ends in the extension .ged. If the file ends with the extension .zip then it has been zipped (compressed) and needs to be unzipped first. See Handling Zipped Files.

===Save the GEDCOM File to Your Computer===
Whether you are downloading the file from the Internet or opening it as an email attachment, the first thing you should do is save the file to a folder on your hard drive. I've got a folder created under "C:\My Download Files\Gedcoms\" where I save my GEDCOM files. If you're saving it from email you may want to scan it for viruses first before saving to your hard drive (see Step 3).

===Scan the GEDCOM for Viruses===
Once you have the file saved to your computer hard drive, it is time to scan it for viruses using your favorite antivirus software program. If you need help with this, see Protecting Yourself from Email Viruses. Even if you know the person who sent you the GEDCOM file, it is better to be safe than sorry.

===Make a Backup of Your Existing Genealogy Database===
If you have a family tree file on your computer you should always make sure you have a recent backup before opening a new GEDCOM file. This will allow you to revert to your original file in case something goes wrong when you're opening/importing the GEDCOM file.

===Open the GEDCOM File with Your Genealogy Software===
Do you have a genealogy software program? If so, then begin your family tree program and close any open family tree project. Then follow the program's instructions for opening/importing a GEDCOM file. If you need help with this, then see How to Open a GEDCOM File in Your Genealogy Software Program. Be sure to look at the GEDCOM file by itself first, rather than opening or merging it directly into your own family tree database. It is much harder to figure out how to remove unwanted people, than it is to add new people later after you have reviewed the new GEDCOM file.

===Generic Instructions for Opening a GEDCOM File:===
* This works for most family tree software programs. See your program's help file for more specific instructions.

1. Launch your family tree program and close any open genealogy files.
2. In the top-left hand corner of your screen, click the File menu.
3. Select either Open, Import or Import GEDCOM.
4. If .ged is not already highlighted in the "file type" box, then scroll down and select GEDCOM or .ged.
5. Browse to the location on your computer where you save your GEDCOM files and select the file that you want to open.
6. The program will create a new genealogy database containing the information from the GEDCOM. Enter a filename for this new database, making sure that is one that you can distinguish from your own files. Example: 'powellgedcom'
7. Click Save or Import.
8. The program may then ask you to make a few choices regarding the import of your GEDCOM file. Just follow the directions. If you're not sure what to select, then just stick with the default options.
9. Click OK.
10. A confirmation box may appear stating that your import was successful.
11. You should now be able to read the GEDCOM file in your genealogy software program as a regular family tree file.

===Other Ways to Open a GEDCOM File===
If you don't have a genealogy software program you can still open and read GEDCOM files. Many free and shareware programs are available which allow you to easily open and view GEDCOM files. You can find a collection of these here: GEDCOM Viewers.

==How Can I Create and Share a GEDCOM File?==

Do you want to share your family tree file with friends, family, or fellow researchers? Unless they use the same genealogy software program as you they will not be able to open and read your family file unless you send it to them in GEDCOM format. The same goes for most online pedigree databases which only accept family tree submissions in GEDCOM format. Learning to save your family tree as a GEDCOM file will make it much easier to share your family tree and connect with fellow researchers.

===How To Save Your Family Tree as a GEDCOM File===
All major family tree software programs support the creation of GEDCOM files. Creating a GEDCOM file does not overwrite you existing data or change your existing file in any way. Instead, a new file is generated by a process known as "exporting." Exporting a GEDCOM file is easy to do with any family tree software by following the basic instructions below. You can also find more detailed instructions in your genealogy software's manual or help system. You should also be sure to remove private information such as birth dates and social security numbers for people in your family tree who are still living in order to protect their privacy.

===Generic Instructions for Creating a GEDCOM File:===

1. Launch your family tree program and open your genealogy file.
2. In the top-left hand corner of your screen, click the File menu.
3. Select either Export or Save as...
4. Change the Save As Type or Destination drop-down box to GEDCOM or .GED.

6. Enter a filename such as 'powellfamilytree' (the program will automatically add the .ged extension)
7. Click Save or Export.
8. Some type of confirmation box will appear stating that your export has succeeded.
9. Click OK.
10. If your genealogy software program does not have the ability to protect the privacy of living individuals, then try one of these GEDCOM privatizing programs to filter the details of living people from your original GEDCOM file.
11. Your file is now ready to share with others (see below).

===How to Share My GEDCOM File===
Once you have created a GEDCOM file you can now easily share it with others via email, floppy disk/CD, or the Internet.

*To share your GEDCOM file via email you will need to send it as an attachment to your email. Be sure to include a short note in your email telling the recipient what to expect in the attachment so that they won't delete it as a potential virus-laden attachment. You may also want to attach brief instructions on how to open the file or point them to my instructions on How to Open a GEDCOM File. If you need help with how to send attachments via email, then try How to Send an Email Attachment.

*To share your GEDCOM file via snail mail you will need to save it to a floppy disk or burn it onto a CD.

*You can also share your GEDCOM file with others online by uploading to one of the many pedigree databases which exist on the Web. The best of these promise not to sell your information for profit and allow for easy searching for matches against the names in your family tree.

== GEDCOMs and PhpGedView ==

[[PhpGedView]] maintains a GEDCOM file on the web server as well as using a database to store the same information in a manor that allows quicker and easier searching and editing of the GEDCOM data. Although, most of the time you do not need to be aware of this it is helpful in understanding how GEDCOMs are [[add a GEDCOM|added]] and used by PhpGedView.

== Lineage-Linked GEDCOM Form ==

This is a model of the lineage-linked GEDCOM structure for submitting data to other lineage-linked GEDCOM processing systems. A header and a trailer record are required, and they can enclose any number of data records. Tags must be used in the same context as shown in the following form. User defined tags (see <[[NEW_TAG]]> ) are discouraged but when used must begin with an under-score.

Hit counters are a feature of many applications, and allow some measure of the use (or popularity) of pages.

PhpGedView allows you to show hit counters. To set or unset this feature, you must have admin rights. In the Administration panel, click on Manage GEDCOMs.../ then Edit for the Configuration file. Under Display and Layout you will find Hide and Show...down the bottom of that pane is the option.

Data is stored in a text file in the index folder. If you look, it will have a name like xxxxx.gedpgv_counters.txt, where xxxxx is the name of your original GEDCOM.

Within the text file are lines like:

[[AFN]] - stands for Ancestral File Number -- This is a number that is set by LDS if any of the information you have in your GEDCOM has been submitted to LDS, either by you or by another. This number is as unique as your fingerprints, and should not be changed. IF you change it, you could inadvertently tie that person's AFN to another's, and you could have problems in the future. Best bet is not to change this number (if present) at all.

[[BIC]] - The individual's parents were sealed before he or she was born. Means "Born In the Covenant".

[[CAL]] - Author "calculated" the date from 2 or more varying sources.

[[CAN]] - A couple's LDS sealing was "cancelled".

[[CLE]] - The name has been submitted for an LDS ordinance, but the ordinance work has not yet been done. Means "Cleared".

[[COM]] - LDS temple ordinances have been done, but you do not know the dates. Means "Completed".

[[DNS]] - An LDS sealing should not occur. Means "Do Not Seal".

DNS/CAN - A sealing-to-spouse ordinance was cancelled and should not be redone.

[[INF]] - An individual died as an "infant".

[[LDS]] - stands for "Latter Day Saints", referencing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints -- LDS is mostly responsible for making the GEDCOM the standard file format that can be read by most family tree software.

PAF/PAF5 - stands for "Personal Ancestral File"/"Personal Ancestral File 5" -- a free family tree building program, developed by LDS to allow people to build their own family trees/pedigrees. The number 5 stands for the version number of the program.

RIN - stands for "Record Identification Number".

<strike>[[RTL]] - stands for "Right To Left" meaning that the language is written Right To Left -- some languages are written LTR (Left To Right) -- there is an option when uploading your first/replacement GEDCOM that asks if you want it read RTL.</strike>

STI - A baby was born dead or "Stillborn".

SUB - The name has been "submitted" and cleared for LDS ordinances, but the ordinance work is not yet done.

UNC - An individual did not have enough information to qualify for ordinances. Means "Uncleared".

When adding Facts to an individual, there are a bunch of different abbreviations used. In general, most of the abbreviations are just a shortened version of the actual word. For example, If you wanted to add a birth to a family, you can add a new "Fact", and input the information as such: BIRT 1 Jan 2008. NOTE that the first word is short of the "H" at the end of "BIRTH". This is the way most of the words are abbreviated for Facts. Below is the list of Fact ABBReviations. Please note that some of them are empty, as I do not know what they stand for. I am currently working on getting them updated.

Thank you for updating my last. But I was hoping for more of an answer, but, here is a start if you want to use it as a place to jump from:

I am the person who developed/bashed together the Lightbox/Album module.

I am a self taught PHP and JavaScript cobbler, but just wanted to add a bit of life to PGV.

My thoughts on PGV (from a module developers point of view):

A) I echo fisharebest's items - vis.

1. We should remove all presentation and layout from the HTML and put it in CSS.
2. Store everything in the database. This means everything.
It includes all the stuff we currently store in files.

B) My own thoughts on what is needed.

1. A simpler/better way to add a tab on the indi page.
2. A developer's page giving some basic rules to follow of how to develop a module.
3. A good way to be able to sort media by any means the user wants
(probably means an extra sort table in the database based upon an individual
with links to family items too e.g. marriage cert.)
