About
Randy has been using PHPGedView regularly since February 2009. While he continually evaluates it against paid and free services, he keeps coming back to it as a primary resource to store and maintain family history he is gathering. One of the big pluses is the multi-lingual support as his relatives (second cousins and closer) are spread throughout the world and are native with languages other than English.

A big goal of his now is to get a Wiki tied more closely in as a way to capture family stories and information. While he is impressed with some of the Joomla installations which embed PHPGedView, and knows MediaWiki (this site) can be so embedded as well; still not sure of this direction. Currently exploring other solutions and open to hearing from others on this topic.

I believe that once we have identified all the items that need to go into this page that it should be protected from editing. All the items on the page have come from navigating through the administrative areas of phpGedView.

Hope editing the main page was not a major issue. You do not have staging turned on so there was not much choice. It has been a struggle to get by nuances of the software the last year or so of use and am now trying to bring 5 cousins up to speed. So I could either write a document on my own site's wiki or try and improve the community page. Being willing to share the burden, I chose the latter.

Some material is now replicated that is further down the page. But it was just those points I feel need to be brought forward much, much earlier for the new user. Another not addressed yet is the staged editing (edit / accept) which can really frustrate users even if they have accept privilege and can see the pending changes. As it is the page is very large. Likely needs to be broken up into chapters or similar. But the Quick Start either needs to be one sentence bullets with the links to the more detailed pages OR a little more tutorial as I have started to expand it too. Can really be either way. Only chose the latter as I did not want to remove material already there.

Let me know if you want me to continue with this effort. I have a 1,000+ person database that is now starting to grow more rapidly as these distant cousins get involved. (Likely you have all been there ...)

{{glossary | description = The path to a directory readable and writable by the webserver where PhpGedView should store media files (include the trailing "/"). PhpGedView does not require this directory's name to be "media/". You can choose any name you like. See Configuration_-_Multimedia#Multimedia_Directory for more information.

You can move media files to a protected directory outside the webserver accessible area (i.e. outside where a URL can retrieve them). See Media_Firewall for more information. Note that if you do this, you must still have a "media/" directory in the webserver accessible area as the Media_Firewall works by trapping the error when the file is not found in this default place.

<strike>Need to verify the following statement: MarekZ
For security, this directory should be placed somewhere in the server's file space that is not accessible from the Internet.
